The recent growth in the Midlands beauty and fashion industry

Over the past few years, and despite the modern-day growth in many inventive new digital platforms, high street shopping is still a highly enjoyable experience for many people. With there being so many new businesses now available on the market, within the city of Birmingham the beauty and fashion industries have seen a real rise in their consumer base in recent times.

As social media is becoming increasingly influential in the day-to-day lives of many of its users, keeping up appearances and looking your best is arguably more important now than ever before. Due to such factors, both the beauty and fashion sectors have enjoyed a steady rate of growth throughout the last few years in the Midlands.

Since 2010, the hairdressing and beauty industry has proved highly successful across Birmingham. Despite the market being popular across the country, between the years of 2010 and 2018, the growth rate in the West Midlands was recorded at 87 per cent, which was 24 per cent higher than the national rate.

As of 2018, there were 655 hairdressing and beauty shops in the city. In turn, this equates to approximately 57 shops for every 100,000 people in the area. While many business sectors are struggling to not only compete but also survive on our high streets, the competitive nature of hairdressers and barbershops have been central to the industry’s sustained rise. Moreover, with fairly low costs and opportunities for expansion, the market itself is always going to be in demand.

Fast Fashion and Promotions

Along with the Midlands being the home of the rising beauty industry, it’s also the destination for the world’s biggest Primark which spans across 160,000 square feet. The megastore has recently become something of a tourist attraction, with shoppers based in Scotland and Yorkshire being offered low-price coach trips to experience the store. Aside from the fashion aspect of the Birmingham-based retail outlet, and to illustrate how popular the beauty sector has become in the area, the shop itself contains an in-store blow-dry bar and beauty salon.

One of the main reasons for the fashion industry’s recent success in the Midlands area and beyond is due to their heavy focus on offers and promotions. For a long period of time, the online gaming market, in particular, has used promotions and incentives to attract their customers. Online casino platforms such as Betfair, for example, offer a range of promotions across various traditional casino games such as blackjack, poker, roulette, slots, and many more, in order to grow their consumer base. It seems the fashion industry has not only cottoned onto this concept but made a success of it.

Potential to Grow

Ultimately, sectoral growth within the Midlands area and across the beauty and fashion industries has occurred through a mixture of increased competition and greater customer-targeted offers. Crucially, with hairdressing and beauty shops always having the scope to do business, and with more companies likely to follow the promotional model set out by online casinos, both markets could be set to enjoy a steady period of growth in the coming years.
