A Warwickshire garden centre is looking ahead to growth in 2014, having made a significant investment in new facilities with support from Yorkshire Bank.
Smith Nurseries, in Baginton near Coventry, has redeveloped its existing site with the erection of a purpose-built structure to provide more than 8,500 square feet of new retail space.
The redevelopment was supported by a new six-figure finance package from Yorkshire Bank’s Business & Private Banking Centre in Birmingham, arranged by Relationship Manager James Oliver.
The new space is expected to increase the garden centre’s visitor capacity by up to 50% in the first two years and includes a new cafe specialising in locally-sourced, seasonal and home-cooked food.
Founded in 1942, Smiths Nurseries remains a family business and is now run by founder Eric’s grandson Mick and wife Tara, who oversee a team of 15 employees.
Having taken the business over from his father, Peter, Mick has continued to develop the retail side of the business and has ambitions to make the garden centre a leisure destination for families across the Midlands.
Mick Smith, managing director of Smiths Nurseries, said:
“With the business having been established by my grandfather Eric more than 70 years ago, we have three generations of knowledge and experience in growing premium quality plants for local gardeners.
“As we start to see the green shoots of recovery we want to ensure we continue to offer the best possible products and service to our customers. We really welcome Yorkshire Bank’s support as we build for future growth and secure the business for the next generation of Smiths.”
Richard Wallace, Head of Yorkshire Bank’s Business & Private Centre in Birmingham, said:
“Now in its eighth decade of trading, the success of Smiths Nurseries reflects the experience, drive and expertise Mick brings as the third generation of his family business.
“We are pleased to have been able to support this well-known local business and look forward to helping it, and other entrepreneurial Midlands companies in the future as we start to see further signs of economic recovery.”
Mick Smith was recently joined by family, customers and Chairman of Warwick County Council, Cllr. Dave Shilton, to formally open the redevelopment at a gala launch.
