Worcestershire Law Society appoints rural law specialist as new president

One of Worcestershire’s leading agricultural law experts has been appointed president of the Worcestershire Law Society.

Alexandra Phillips, an associate and farming specialist at county law firm mfg Solicitors, is one of the youngest ever lawyers to hold the position at the historic legal group which has promoted and supported local lawyers for 176 years.

The 35 year-old has set out her vision for the year ahead following her appointment – pledging to give more support to Worcestershire’s next generation of lawyers and forging ‘meaningful’ links with local schools.

Alexandra Phillips said: “To become the Worcestershire Law Society’s new president is a tremendous privilege and I will do all I can to represent my firm and solicitors across the county in a positive way.

“It is a wonderful opportunity and gives me the chance to give something back after qualifying four years ago. Alongside the committee, I am putting together a clear plan for the next 12 months during which I want us to keep supporting local charities and offer a wider variety of training, events and seminars for our members.

“Perhaps most importantly, I want us to do more to bring the area’s younger lawyers into the fold and build meaningful links with local schools and colleges to help promote the legal sector to young people.”

Chairman of mfg Solicitors, Maynard Burton, added: “Alexandra has given a huge contribution to both the society and its members in recent years.

“She understands the make-up of the legal profession here in Worcestershire and we are extremely proud that she has become president for the next 12 months. She is a leader and a fresh thinker who I know will thrive in the role.”

As part of her presidency year, Miss Phillips added that she wants to build on the good work done by her predecessor, lawyer Priya Tromans, and ensure the society is responsive to its members’ needs.

A former pupil at Kings School, she becomes mfg’s second Worcestershire Law Society president in only four years. In 2013, mfg partner Iain Morrison saw a successful 12-month term during which he launched the society’s legal awards – now a firm fixture in the county’s annual calendar.

The Worcestershire Law Society was formed in 1841 by a group of 12 solicitors. The historic legal group continues to promote the county’s legal profession through events, seminars and fundraising activities.
