A West Bromwich pub is flavour of the month after winning the title of National Curry Pub of the Year in a country-wide competition.
The Vine in Roebuck Street has received the accolade from the organisers of National Curry Week, an awareness week held during the second week of October to celebrate one of the country’s most loved dishes, hosted by the Federation of Specialist Restaurants.
It is only the second year the pub category has been included in the awards, and The Vine beat off serious competition from dozens of pubs around the country.
Suki and Bhanu Patel, who have been running the well-renowned pub for more than 35 years, along with their children, Bharat and Hema, said they were thrilled to hear about the win yesterday, especially as the award is voted for by the public.
“We were just delighted to hear we’d won, and the fact that it is our customers who have voted for us makes this a really special award. We’d like to thank everyone who took the time and effort to vote,” said Mr Patel.
“Our indoor barbecue was the first in the region, and has helped ensure our reputation locally, but I think the fact that we have the Hawthorns on our doorstep, and have always welcomed football fans of all clubs from around the country has probably helped cement our popularity nationally.
“It’s always fantastic to receive awards, and this one makes all the effort we’ve put into refurbishing the pub recently, and into running the best pub over the last three decades totally worthwhile. We’ve always prided ourselves in offering restaurant food at pub prices, and this award proves we must be doing something right!”
The Vine was extensively refurbished last year, including the addition of a new and totally unique mural hand-painted on the wall of the barbecue dining room by Birmingham artist Jane Anderson.
National Curry Week’s Peter Grove said he was delighted that The Vine had taken the title in just the second year of the competition, and added that it had been a very popular choice with voters. The award will be presented to the Patel family at a ceremony in London on October 27.
