With exclusive coin collections, products that sell out within days and an ever-expanding team, Hattons of London has had an incredible first year of trading.
Four sought-after limited edition sovereign collections have been released by the firm over the last 12 months, celebrating significant national milestones including the RAF’s 100th anniversary, the Queen and Prince Philip’s platinum wedding anniversary and – most recently – Queen Elizabeth II’s Sapphire Coronation Jubilee.
Hattons of London is a leading expert in rare and exclusive coins with a vast collection which includes the Queen Victoria Silver Double Florin of 1887 – the shortest-lived circulating coin in British history.
Business is booming, with an enviable growth forecast that will see another 10 people join its sales team over the next 12 months. Not bad for a firm that celebrates its first anniversary on June 5. And to mark the occasion, the whole 31-strong team has been whisked away for a well-earned weekend of rest and relaxation in Ibiza, courtesy of Hattons of London boss Simon Mellinger.
Its sales team, which has more than tripled from six to 19, is as unique as the coins the firm sells. While some of its agents have been in sales all of their lives, others have had a number of varied careers.
“We have sales agents from a football coaching background, hairdressers, former JCB workers – we even have a former hospital theatres worker and a midwife. It makes us a pretty unique bunch,” says Karen Barley, Hattons of London’s sales and operations manager.
“We’ve already had to move offices once in the last 12 months to cope with the expanding team. We’re now bursting at the seams and need to start thinking about doing the same again. It’s an amazing problem to have after just 12 months trading and not one we could have ever anticipated.”
Karen said she believed the success of the company was thanks to the exceptional quality of their sovereigns, which are produced to the highest standards possible in 22 carat gold.
“We’ve always been confident in the high-quality coins and service we offer to our customers but we’ve been blown away by the demand. Every collection has had sell outs, with some products being snapped up within days of them being released. We can’t wait to see what the next 12 months brings!”
Customer account manager Zoe Pritchard, from Werrington, swapped hospital patients for coins when she joined the team six months ago and hasn’t looked back since.
“I used to work in hospital theatres and I enjoyed my job,” says Zoe. “But I was working long hours and never saw my kids.
“A friend suggested that I should have a look at Hattons of London and it’s been life-changing. I liked working in theatres, it was very different to what I do now, but I love this place and can’t imagine ever leaving!”
Fellow customer account manager Damon Rogers, 25, who had just 12 months of sales experience before joining Hattons of London when the company started last June, said watching the company grow over the last year had been incredible.
“It’s been amazing to be part of something like this from the very beginning. I started as one of the original team of six and I’ve now got my own team, which is not something I could ever have predicted in such a short space of time. We’ve come such a long way in a year, it’s been brilliant.
“It’s such a positive, happy place to work, with a great team spirit and there’s something new going on all the time. It feels more like I’m with family than with work colleagues, it’s been great.”
