A new bar and restaurant venue in Shrewsbury is bucking the trend by reporting that its first six months in business have exceeded expectations.

Henry Tudor House, situated just off Wyle Cop, opened last November and has since enjoyed a highly successful half-year of operation and has been nominated for two awards.

Proprietors Clare and Graham Jenkins, who invested around £1 million into a six-month refurbishment of the large half-timbered building, report that business is brisk.

“We have been amazed at the response by Shropshire people to Henry Tudor House since its launch late last year,” said Clare, who said that the new enterprise has created 14 jobs and had been nominated for a Mayor of Shrewsbury heritage award and business award.

“From day one we have been extremely busy in our bar, restaurant, meeting rooms and music venue and I have to pay tribute to our team of staff who have coped incredibly well with the demand.

“Considering that there is a good array of well-established restaurants in Shrewsbury we are delighted that local people and visitors have given us such enthusiastic support. Turnover has exceeded our projections and the rest of the year looks just as promising as we have some exciting plans for new developments,” she said.

Henry Tudor House is one of the oldest, most historic half-timbered buildings in the Shrewsbury and is reputed to have got its name when Henry Tudor stayed at the site on his way to victory over Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.

As well as its thriving bar and restaurant it also has an impressive second floor function room which is regularly booked for a range of corporate, as well as social functions.

Graham Jenkins commented: “The top floor has a stage area, superb acoustics and excellent lighting and is now hosting very popular live music events, attracting some top names.

“But it is also being used for business meetings and corporate events for between 30 and 80 people.

“We have a private dining room for up to 14 people which is perfect for smaller meetings and of course our restaurant and bar team are on hand to provide first class refreshments for businesses and organisations so we feel we have provided an excellent addition to the Shrewsbury scene.”
