Midlands Business Networkers talk too much about themselves

Summary

A top business consultant who regularly attends networking meetings throughout the West Midlands has warned that many small business owners who take part in ‘express-networking’ events fail to make a lasting impression because they spend too much time talking about themselves and not enough time showing an interest in others.

Derived from speed-dating, express-networking is for business people seeking exposure to new markets. Through a series of brief exchanges people have the opportunity at meetings to introduce themselves and their business to multiple potential clients. But Ellen Morley, Principal of The Business Company in Shrewsbury, believes the real challenge is making yourself memorable.

"The average designated speaking time at these events is between one and three minutes," says Ellen, "and the majority of people use that time to state their name, outline what their business does and hand out their card. The problem is, however, that 20 to 30 other businesses will do exactly the same during the next hour or so - which means unless the listener hears something that really grabs their attention they are unlikely to remember you.

"When I go to a networking meeting I always try to take something with me - other than my business card - that I can physically hand to people; something memorable they can take away with them. Before I speak I look at who my audience is and I ask a question about their business. Then I try and offer them information that will be of help to their business. For example, I might suggest a potential referral from one of my own clients, or I might recommend one of my clients who can help with something they need.

"The key is to 'engage' the listener and entice them to come and talk to you in more depth at a later date. If you show an interest in others they are far more likely to reciprocate and show an interest in you."
