Towards the end of November, Birmingham’s favourite culinary competition took place, with the aim of highlighting the city’s love of both curry and charity. Curry King of Birmingham, LoveBrum’s annual fundraiser, welcomed celebrity chef judges and saw No5 Chambers take the crown for the best curry creation.
‘Naan of your Business’, No5 Chambers’ team, took the coveted title as this year’s Curry Kings and Queens in an event that welcomed hundreds of guests to Birmingham’s ICC. An evening dedicated to celebrating the work of the Birmingham charity and raising more money for the local projects that it funds, Curry King of Birmingham has fast-become the city’s flagship charity fundraiser.
During the evening, guests were invited to create their own curry, which was cooked live on stage by a guest chef and presented to an esteemed panel of judges. This year saw multi award-winning chefs Aktar Islam (Opheem and Legna) and Alex Claridge (The Wilderness and Nocturnal Animals) joined by Rai Singh (Pushkar and Praza), Nitisha Patel (My Modern Indian Kitchen), and Jaimon George (Zen Metro) on the panel. In addition to acclaimed food Paul Fulford and hospitality expert, Adam Hayes.

“Since its inception, Curry King of Birmingham aimed to be a fundraiser with a difference. Whilst black tie is the dress code, it’s far from your typical charity event – we work hard to plan an event that celebrates all-things-Brum whilst getting each and every guest involved.
This year’s event was bigger and better than ever, welcoming nearly 400 guests and helping us to raise vital funds to help local projects. A huge congratulations to No5 Chambers, who are dedicated LoveBrum patrons, as well as curry connoisseurs it seems! Plus, my extended thanks to everyone involved in making the event what it is and everyone who attended on the night!”
With just one event to go,before the end of 2018, LoveBrum is celebrating its most successful year to date, having reached the milestone of donating £100,000 to local projects and causes. The charity started the year with £250,000 National Lottery funding and a new partnership with Big Lottery Fund, the largest funder of community activity in the UK. This partnership allowed LoveBrum to launch a new way of funding projects with a monthly vote that now sees all three causes receive funding; £2,000, £1,000 and £500 respectively.
This year has also seen LoveBrum welcome its first Executive Director to work alongside its Board of Trustees to drive the charity forward. Paul Mitchell, joins the charity from Midlands based Royal Life Saving Society UK, where he spent four years as Operations Director and Deputy CEO for the UK and Commonwealth. This comes in addition to new Trustees, Patrons and Corporate Sponsors all joining the charity.
