Aldi, the UK’s favourite supermarket*, has completed the second stage of its head office expansion and submitted new plans to further extend the site.
This latest investment of £70m has added more than 150,000 sq ft to Aldi’s Warwickshire Head Office, including new facilities such as Aldi’s ‘Taste Kitchen’, a state-of-the-art development kitchen where Aldi’s UK-based Buying team will be able to create and test new products.
Aldi has also submitted a planning application for the third phase of its head office expansion. It plans to invest a further £57m on a 120,000 sq ft development on land adjacent to the current Atherstone site.
Once the work is finished, there will be a significant increase in the number of employees operating from the entire Atherstone site across a number of departments including its UK-based Buying team, along with its IT, Marketing and Logistics functions.
Matthew Barnes, CEO – Aldi UK and IRE, said: “This investment to enhance our support functions and logistics capabilities is about putting the long-term foundations in place to continue opening more stores across the UK.
“We have a unique business model that makes us the most efficient supermarket in Britain and we will continue investing in this to deliver the quality products and low prices that our customers have come to expect.”
Aldi has invested over £2bn during the last five years in opening new stores and improving its distribution capabilities across the UK. New distribution centres in Sheppey (Kent) and Sawley (Derbyshire) are also under development as the business remains on course to have 1,000 UK stores by 2022.
