Semta urges employers to follow ZF Services new apprentice commitment

With the support of sector skills council Semta, ZF Services UK Ltd has announced plans to recruit up to five new apprentices each year moving forward.

ZF Services UK Ltd is an East Midlands based sales and service company of the ZF Group - an automotive supplier for driveline and chassis technology.  The company's apprenticeship commitment will contribute towards meeting the predicted future skills needs of the region where Semta research indicates that 14,100 new technical recruits are needed between now and 2016.

Philip Whiteman, Chief Executive of Semta said: "We know that employing apprentices delivers an excellent return on investment for businesses. 80 per cent of companies who employ apprentices say they make their workforce more productive and 88% reckon their workforce becomes better motivated.

"We urge other companies to follow ZF Services example whilst funding and support is available to take on apprentices. The benefits are well proven - improved skills, better productivity and motivation."

Paula Saunders, Head of HR of ZF Services UK Ltd said: "We recognise that developing a highly skilled, flexible workforce will bring competitive advantages. Our apprentices will help ensure that the company has the technical skills to deliver an efficient, cost effective service for our customers."

Working with Semta, ZF Services UK Ltd will enrol apprentices onto a Level 2 course, whilst also allowing them to complete an experience profile to qualify for the NVQ 3 in Mechatronics.

The business, which employs around 200 people, is responsible for the remanufacture and repair of transmission systems, axles and steering products for passenger car, rail, off highway, commercial vehicle, military and marine markets, it is also using its technical expertise in the low carbon wind turbine sector. ZF Services UK Ltd also is responsible for the sale, service and distribution of parts in these markets.

Semta can support companies to hire, train and fund apprentices or provide advice and guidance on the many available frameworks and qualifications. For further information, contact Customer Services on 0845 643 9001.
