Owners of commercial properties across Shropshire are being
warned to safeguard their buildings against metal thieves.
Dave Williams, of Henshalls Insurance Brokers in Newport and
Shrewsbury, said thieves were increasingly targeting commercial
properties and transport systems to steal valuable metal and
cables.
"The rise in metal prices has led to a spate of thefts all over
the UK, and it's important that property owners protect their
buildings as best as they can."
Dave said most commercial property damage insurance policies
included theft cover, but it may be restricted to theft only after
forcible and violent entry to or exit from the building.
"This may mean that theft of lead, piping, or cables from
outside the building may not be automatically covered, and you
might have to pay extra for this additional protection.
"If you believe your premises are at risk from this kind of
theft, make sure you notify your insurer and check the terms and
conditions of your policy very carefully."
And Dave said as well as ensuring adequate insurance cover,
property owners must be aware of the increased risks and make sure
extra security measures were in place.
"Security cameras and security lighting at the perimeter of your
site and around the building are sensible precautions, and secure
all external equipment paying special attention to any metal-based
items.
"Don't make it easy for thieves to get access to the roof of the
property - keep ladders locked and hidden away, and keep
scaffolding secure. And remove any items that may provide a boost
for a burglar such as waste bins, tall trees and water butts.
"You could also consider putting anti-climb paint on drain pipes
and don't forget to put up deterrent warning signs.
"Thieves are going to even greater lengths to steal these metals
and they're risking their lives as well as long prison
sentences.
"By taking sensible security precautions, and by ensuring the
right insurance cover is in place, you can protect your property
and so make sure your business can continue to operate safely and
effectively."
