A Shropshire student has won a top regional award thanks to her
commitment and hard work on three key development projects in the
county.
Emma Williams, from Much Wenlock, initially joined Kier Moss as
a site secretary on the project to rebuild her old school - the
William Brookes School.
She has since transferred to the site of the new Abraham Darby
Sports and Learning Community in Madeley, where she is working to
become a quantity surveyor, and she has also worked on the
development of the sixth form block at the nearby Madeley
Academy.
Now thanks to her attitude and team working abilities, she has
received this year's Young Achiever Award at the Kier Moss Regional
Awards. She was chosen after receiving votes from other members of
her team and from management representatives.
"It was a real shock and I had absolutely no idea I had won - I
didn't even know I had been nominated," said Emma. But it's a great
honour and I'm extremely proud that everyone thinks I deserve such
recognition."
Kier Moss regional framework manager, Richard Collin, presented
Emma with a voucher for an "experience day" and said her success
was very well-deserved.
"Emma works confidently whether she's on a team project or
working on her own, and her motivation and commitment has been very
impressive. She has worked very hard to keep up with her college
work alongside the demands of a tough day job, and the success
reflects her efforts which show she has the potential to make a
real contribution in the workplace now and in the future."
Emma is one of three Shropshire students benefiting from the
Kier Moss training and development programme.
Regional director, Gary Pearce, said: "Our partnership working
with the local community has led to our company directly employing
these three young people who are all from the local area, and who
are now studying foundation degrees in construction-related
subjects."
The students are working towards the Kier foundation degree in
construction, supported by Shrewsbury College of Arts and
Technology, and Sheffield Hallam University, and their course is
fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Builders.
