Managing agent, DTZ has announced that The Fort Shopping Park
has won a Silver Green Apple Award in the national campaign to find
Britain's greenest companies, councils and communities.
The Shopping Park's entry, entitled 'The Fort Wages War on
Waste', competed against more than 500 other nominations to win the
award for sustainable development. Marjan Horne, Centre Manager at
The Fort, together with managing agent DTZ, have been the driving
force for improving its waste policy by researching ways to reduce
waste, increase recycling and regain control of spiralling waste
budgets, collected the award at a presentation ceremony in the
House of Commons last month.
Marjan Horne said: "We are delighted to win a Green Apple Award.
We wanted to do away with the outdated methods of waste disposal
that were being used to help save the environment and are amazed at
the results achieved with just a few simple changes."
Paul Delany of DTZ commented: "This award win was truly a
collective effort and we couldn't have achieved it without the
support from staff and occupiers who got behind the project so that
recycling has quickly become second nature. We will be setting
targets for next year to build on the great work already
achieved."
The Green Apple Awards began in 1994 and are organised by The
Green Organisation, an independent, non-profit environment group
dedicated to recognising and promoting environmental best practice.
Judges for the Green Apple Awards are drawn from the Environmental
Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the
Chartered Institution for Waste Management and other independent
bodies.
The Fort Shopping Park is Birmingham's premier out-of-town
shopping experience with 28 quality national retailers, which stock
some of the largest ranges in the country, late opening hours and
safe, free parking for over 2,000 cars both above and below
ground.
