Pizza time brings joy to young carers

Staff at Pizza Express in Worcester brought a smile to the faces of young carers when they hosted a special Christmas party.

The young carers meet regularly at St Richard's Hospice and were delighted to be invited to Pizza Express.  They turned their hand to helping make pizzas in the kitchen before sitting down to eat with their families.

Callum Davies, Assistant Restaurant Manager said, "When you're in a position to help other people and don't - that's sad and at Pizza Express Worcester we are all about people so we decided we were going to help make a difference to a local charity.

"The decision to support St Richard's over all of the other worthy charities throughout Worcestershire was largely determined by the nature of the charity - St Richard's Hospice has touched many a heart - the connection I have with the hospice for instance, runs a lot deeper than any business decision."

Pizza Express is fundraising for St Richard's by encouraging diners to write a message on a star in the window for a £2 donation.

St Richard's Corporate Fundraiser Rachel Jones said, "We are thrilled that Pizza Express are supporting St Richard's and the Young Carers Group had a fantastic time there. The star messages are filling the windows now and make a lovely festive read, so when you are eating at Pizza Express take a moment to write yours too."

St Richard's Hospice provides free specialist palliative care for patients living with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and supports their families. Each year the hospice team supports over 2,200 patients and family members in Worcestershire.

Patients are cared for in Day Hospice, the 16-bed In-patient Unit or in their own homes by a specialist professional team as well as many trained volunteers.

In the In-patient Unit specialist staff are on hand 24 hours a day to manage patients' symptoms and where, if they so choose, patients may spend the last few days of life in comfort and dignity. St Richard's is grateful for all donations towards the £5.4m they need to raise this year to continue their work.
