Children in Alvaston are set to get a new state-of-the-art play
area - thanks to a £36,000 grant from the Big Lottery.
The landscaped playground, will boast all natural play equipment
including a climbing structure, chain link bridge and meadow area.
It will be officially opened by Councillor Ranjit Banwait,
for Boulton, on Saturday 10 December between 1-4pm.
National affordable housing provider Affinity Sutton, which owns
the land and has around 351 properties in Derby, teamed up with the
Sutton Estate Residents Association, Groundwork Derby and
Derbyshire as well as the Big Lottery Community Spaces programme to
successfully apply for funding for the play area after consulting
with local residents.
The work has taken around two months to complete and a
celebratory event is planned to take place including giant games
and an environmental treasure hunt provided by Groundwork.
Andrew Cooper, Neighbourhood Investment Manager (North), said:
"As a business for social purpose we are committed to
investing in our communities and helping create places where
communities can thrive. There are lots of families living in
the area who have told us they would like new play equipment and we
have worked together with our partners to make it happen."
Kirsty Youngs, Managing Director at Groundwork Derby &
Derbyshire, said: "We carried out an estate wide consultation
called 'planning for real' where huge design plans were drawn up of
the estate to identify areas of development and we invited the
local community to get involved with their own ideas, we also
created a master plan with the findings and worked with the
Affinity Sutton to secure funding for the project. Groundwork
Derby & Derbyshire can help local community groups and
organisations apply for funding and we have an excellent track
record for getting our proposals accepted."
Kathleen Brear, Chair of the Derby Sutton Estate Tenants
Association, said: "It is a real state-of-the-art play area.
There are lots of families in the area and I am sure it will be a
real success."
