A state-of-the-art critical care unit that will help tackle a
shortage within the Mid Trent Critical Care Network has been
officially opened at a private Nottinghamshire hospital.
The four-bed unit is part of a £9m development scheme that
will also see the introduction of new operating theatres at BMI
Healthcare's The Park Hospital, in Arnold's Burnstump County
Park.
The unit also contains an isolation cubical and an ambient line
lighting system specifically designed to aid recovery in
patients.
The opening ceremony was conducted by John Von Klemperer,
Managing Director of Hospital Operations at BMI
Healthcare.
Critical Care Unit manager Jenny Holmes explained there was
currently a shortage of critical care beds within the Mid Trent
Critical Care Network and that The Park plans to work alongside the
NHS so that the new facility will be of benefit to the entire
region.
She said: "BMI The Park has benefited from the support of the
network for over ten years and are now proud to be in the position
to repay this support should the need arise.".
Consultant critical care advisor Iain Farqhar said: "This new
unit really does put BMI The Park at the cutting edge of critical
care provision.
"It ensures a safe environment is available to those patients
requiring a higher level of care than was initially planned
following their surgery as well as providing for the emergencies
that can occur at any acute hospital."
Regarding the lighting system, Jenny explained: "In the absence
of significant natural daylight, the ambient line lighting creates
the natural cycle of day to night which aids the recovery process
by increasing the wellbeing of patients.
"The ambient line sail provides the personal touch for increased
patient comfort while soothing colours provide a relaxing
atmosphere reducing stress and anxiety."
