Eco friendly public told to source wood naturally to keep warm this winter

Environmentally friendly members of the public are being urged to avoid buying kiln-dried wood as they prepare for the colder months ahead.

Dave Nash, managing director of Birmingham based garden experts Gardenbusters warned that kiln dried wood totally defeats attempts by people to reduce their carbon footprint.

Mr Nash said: "Kiln dried wood is dried in huge ovens which have a hugely detrimental effect on the planet. There is no need for it and many people who buy wood as they want a real fire don't think of this and need to be told."

Mr Nash, whose company has over 20 years experience in gardening maintenance and consultancy, added: "In recent years due to increased fossil fuel prices and the popularity of open fires, chimineas and fire pits means there is a great demand for logs. A lot of this is kiln dried and transported all over the country, thereby adding even more miles to the carbon footprint."

He called on the public to source local suppliers, who show ecologically sound methods in the production of wood for burning.

He added: "Most good garden maintenance companies cut up the logs themselves and then store them until they are ready. Additionally, they can provide wood mulch, which is an excellent weed suppressant without chemicals. These companies are local, easy to source, and can help the local economy."

"In these environmentally aware times everyone can do their own little bit to help."
