The Shropshire organisation which is the largest provider of education courses for motorists has been appointed to run a new series of speed awareness courses for Avon and Somerset Police.

The TTC Group runs thousands of courses each year - in Shropshire and across the UK - targeted at motorists who drink drive, speed and commit minor traffic offences. The aim is to educate motorists so that road casualties are reduced and the UK's death and injury toll continues to fall.

"We receive hundreds of emails and letters from drivers who attend our courses who say they are much more positive and enlightening than expected and that their driving has improved as a result," said TTC Group manager Des Morrison.

"They thank us for being offered the opportunity to attend a course which acts as a timely refresher about the rules of the road."

He said the TTC Group, of Hadley Park, Telford, was pleased to be the preferred provider of speed awareness courses throughout Avon and Somerset with courses due to begin in early December.

Edcuation courses in the county were suspended seven months ago when funding was withdrawn by the local authority for static safety cameras. Speeding motorists caught by mobile patrols were instead sent a warning letter.

Police have now launched Relentless, a campaign aimed at catching all speeding motorists in Avon and Somerset with six mobile patrols sited in locations where speeding is causing a serious road safety problem.

Ch Insp Yannis Georgiou said: "Education over prosecution will assist in keeping our communities safe. Research has shown that when faced with the full impact and possible consequences of speeding, individuals are less likely to speed again."

The national speed awareness course will be offered as an alternative to prosecution in circumstances when Home Office criteria is met. Motorists who attend the course will not get points on their licence.

"Those who speed should be aware that the mobile vans we have at our disposal will be deployed in various locations to ensure road safety. The chances are that, if you speed within Avon & Somerset, you will be caught."
