The Ricoh Arena has scooped joint top place in the inaugural CRC
Energy Efficiency Scheme league table.
Over 2,100 companies across the UK which use more than six mega
watts of energy each year were measured by the CRC's compulsory
scheme which aims to improve energy efficiency and cut emissions in
large public and private sector organisations.
The first CRC league table, which has been published by the
Environment Agency, judged companies and organisations on the
actions they have already taken to manage their energy.
The news follows the Ricoh being awarded the Carbon Trust
Standard and its shortlisting in the Energy Awards 2011.
Anthony Mundy, facilities director at the Ricoh Arena, said the
venue had made great strides in reducing its carbon emissions and
introducing green initiatives.
He said: "We have reduced the energy usage throughout the site
and we are continuing to do that with the measures we are putting
in place.
"We are particularly pleased to have reduced our carbon
footprint by 23 per cent which has been achieved with a range of
measures from installing passive infra-red sensors in corridors so
that lights are not left on to introducing a billing system to
accurately charge tenants for their energy use.
"We are also looking at renewable sources of energy such as
solar panels and wind turbines to put us another step ahead for
future league tables.
"The CRC is encouraging everyone from supermarkets to
universities and football grounds to further reduce its emissions
and promote a better understanding of energy usage because the
organisations involved are responsible for about ten per cent of
the UK's emissions.
"This is the first ever league table in the UK and it should
encourage organisations to improve their energy efficiency and
there is the added benefit of saving money by reducing their
bills.
"We are really pleased to be joint top of the first CRC table
along with 24 other companies and organisations and it underlines
that the schemes we have put in place are making a real difference
and that we are fully committed to making the Ricoh as green a
venue as possible."
