Shropshire recruitment agency TRS Personnel is celebrating after
reaching its target of planting 1,000 trees, slashing the company's
carbon footprint.
The award-winning Telford business has sponsored the planting of
trees across the country, with 200 young hazel trees now growing in
Shropshire thanks to the Small Woods Association.
TRS director Vicki Kelly said: "We are committed to supporting
our local community and the environment, hence the decision to
plant more than 200 trees in Shropshire. But we have also joined
household names such as Tesco, Marks & Spencer and Disney in
supporting the Woodland Trust's carbon removal scheme, by planting
a further 100 trees across the UK as part of the trust's
initiative."
TRS Personnel have also planted more than 500 saplings through
the Trees for Cities scheme, 100 via the national Tree Appeal and
another 100 with the Heart of England Forest project.
Miss Kelly said: "Although as a service sector company working
in the recruitment industry, we are not legally required to reduce
our emissions, this was a commitment we made as a business to do
our bit for the environment.
"Each time we heat our offices, drive to a meeting, or take a
flight, fossil fuels are burnt and carbon
dioxideisreleasedintotheatmosphere.WeallneedtotakestepstoreduceourCO2
emissions and planting trees was just one of the ways in which we
could reduce our carbon footprint responsibly."
The company's environmental policy is just one of a range of
standards and commitments made by TRS Personnel as part of its
corporate social responsibility agenda.
Luke Neal of the Coalbrookdale-based Small Woods Association
Shropshire, said: "We are a charity dedicated to the creation and
protection of woodland and extremely grateful to the support of TRS
Personnel for helping us to achieve that aim.
"The amount of CO2 a tree will offset depends on many factors,
such as the type of tree, where it is planted and the amount of
room it has to grow. But on average, one broad leaf tree will
absorb in the region of 1 tonne of carbon dioxide during its full
life-time."
"The hazel whips from TRS Personnel are being planted in
Limekiln Wood on the Ercall in Telford. Hazel is an ideal species
for coppicing as each time it is cut it sends up many new shoots,
this provides the woodsman with useful straight sticks and poles
which can be used to make a number of products from walking sticks
to woven panels."
TRS Personnel is a leading Midlands recruitment company with
offices in Shrewsbury, Stafford and Wolverhampton. It was the 2011
winner of the Business in the Community Award at the Shropshire
Business Awards.
