The Wolverhampton business set up by Irish brothers Larry and Maurice McAuliffe over forty years ago, has been voted the region's best small family business, in the Midlands' only Awards initiative for family businesses and their leaders.

McAuliffe Civil Engineering has won the Best Small Family Business of the Year category, sponsored by V Formation, in the Midlands Family Business Awards.

The company picked up the trophy at a prestigious dinner at Birmingham's Town Hall on the 17th November in front of an audience of more than 300 guests.

The Best Small Family Business category is one of ten in the Midlands Family Business Awards. Now in their second year, the Awards are run by The Wilson Organisation and are a not-for-profit venture, with all proceeds going to charities supporting young enterprise and young people - The Children's Society and The Willow Foundation.

This award category, new for 2011, recognises the large number of smaller family businesses, as Hilary Campton of category sponsors V Formation explains: "Small family business make a significant contribution to the Midlands GDP and the judges were looking for evidence of financial stability, good governance, philanthropy, and clear family values."

McAuliffe Civil Engineering was established in 1971 by the McAuliffe brothers and has since grown to be regarded as one of the Midlands leading environmental civil engineering contractors. The business has always remained in Wolverhampton and since 2003, the business has had the second generation of the McAuliffe family at its helm, and today works with housebuilders, main contractors, commercial developers, public bodies and environmental and geotechnical consultants. The company provides a packaged offering across demolition, land remediation, reclamation and earthworks, and haulage services.

Runners-up in the best Small Family Business of the year category were Civil Defence Supply of Lincoln and T Nutt & Sons of Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

Civil Defence Supply is a specialist in the design of police protective and defensive systems. The company was founded in the early 1990's and today is run by Gerard Bauer, designer and production manager, alongside his brother Eran, in charge of sales and administration. The company supplies its niche service and products to every police force in the UK, all HM prisons, tri-service MoD, and governments overseas.

Chesterfields' T Nutt & Sons is a family run and owned carpet and flooring business, that is today run by brothers David, Keven and Patrick Nutt, and was founded by their great grandfather Thomas Nutt in 1869.

The headline category in the Awards - The Midlands Family Business of the Year - was won by Nottinghamshire-based Herbert Baggaley Construction Limited and at the Awards' dinner, the company's Managing Director Ian Baggaley accepted the Award from Chris Taylor of Smith Cooper, headline sponsor of the 2011 Awards, and Charlotte Perkins, managing director of Wilsons. Judges for the headline category were Chris Taylor, Mark Samworth of Leicestershire family business Samworth Brothers and Wilsons' Gary Cormack and Annabel Prow.

Runners-up in the headline Award were Derbyshire's C W Sellors and Salts Healthcare of Aston, Birmingham.
