Local construction firms are being encouraged to find out how
they can help rebuild Christchurch at a special breakfast event on
Thursday 8 December at the Jury's Inn Hotel, Nottingham, hosted by
UK Trade & Investment.
Over 10,000 homes will need to be rebuilt and the Central
Business District of the city needs to be reconstructed to
withstand potential future earthquakes.
Paul Tuckley,Trade Development Manager for the British
Consulate General in Auckland, will be visiting Nottingham to
discuss how local companies might help with the city's
reconstruction, which is being overseen by the Canterbury
Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) using a total insurance pot of
over $16 billion New Zealand dollars.
Christine Johnson, an International Trade Adviser and
construction sector lead for UK Trade & Investment East
Midlands, said:
"This special visit by Paul Tuckley to the East Midlands is a
really good opportunity for local construction firms to find out
first-hand how they can become involved in the reconstruction of
the city. Paul will also be able to tell them about other
construction opportunities available in New Zealand; for a small
country it has a large industry that currently employs over 181,000
people through 50,000 organisations. Alongside this the the
industry is showing positive signs of increased economic growth
with building consents rising to $801 million in February 2012,
from a low of $695 million in May 2009."
The New Zealand Government has allocated $7.5 billion of new
capital towards The National Infrastructure Plan. The investment
plan has identified five immediate infrastructure priorities:
broadband, electricity transmission, regulatory reform and
roads of national significance.
