Businesses across Shropshire are being urged to take winter
seriously - before the bad weather really sets in.
Dave Williams, from Henshalls Insurance Brokers in Newport and
Shrewsbury, said every year damage running into millions of pounds
was caused through burst pipes, roof snow collapses, and
flooding.
"Research has shown that 13 per cent of small businesses said
they were seriously affected by last year's bad weather, and 37 per
cent said they were faced with winter-related problems.
"But taking some basic precautions now and planning ahead may
help to minimise the effects of the weather, or even prevent
incidents happening altogether."
Dave said businesses should start by ensuring their premises
were winter-proof by protecting pipes and tanks with good quality
lagging, and repair any dripping taps or faulty ball valves as they
could cause waste pipes to freeze.
"If your building will be unoccupied for any length of time, or
has a history of freezing, leave the heating set at a low level, or
drain all equipment that may be at risk of condensation or
freezing.
"Make sure your heating system has been properly serviced, and
in periods of very cold weather, arrange for your premises to be
inspected at least daily."
Dave said company bosses must double check the layout and routes
of all water, gas and electricity services, and record the
information carefully, as well as identifying the location of all
main and subsidiary stop-taps.
"And research the contact details of reliable and local plumbing
contractors in advance to build up a network of contacts before any
crisis occurs."
He said as well as preparing the building itself, companies must
check their insurance cover was up-to-date, and that they had
well-organised contingency plans in place so that the business
could continue no matter what challenges the winter may bring.
"Heavy snowfall and icy conditions interrupt deliveries, cause
heating and power failures, and often mean your staff will not be
able to get into work.
"So think carefully about how you will handle the issues such
difficult weather brings, and act as soon as possible to make sure
you're fully prepared."
