De Montfort University (DMU) is hosting a free event bringing
together transport experts and academics to explore smarter and
more eco-friendly ways of getting around cities.
Intelligent Mobility: A Commercial Reality aims to bring experts
together to share ideas and identify ways of ensuring the UK makes
intelligent transport systems and electric cars a commercial
reality.
There are significant pressures on the transport sector to
reduce congestion and environmental impact. The effective
development and use of Intelligent Mobility (IM) systems will
address these issues and bring significant benefits to society and
businesses.
IM systems combine innovations in IT and telecoms to allow the
flow of information to and from drivers to improve traffic
efficiency and road safety. Other major benefits include reduced
air and noise pollution on highways and the creation of
traffic-free zones in cities.
One of the cutting-edge solutions of smarter mobility could be
the implementation of electric vehicles (EVs) to combat traffic
congestion.
In England alone, the cost of congestion is predicted to reach
£22 billion by 2025, according to the UK Department for
Transport. EVs would work by using in-car technology to anticipate
traffic conditions and guide drivers along less congested
routes.
The event, which is taking place at Leicester's National Space
Centre on Friday 11 November, will include informative keynote
speakers, networking and workshops focused on emerging technologies
and projects being undertaken by participating universities. The
key purpose of the event is to create a list of issues and
opportunities and explore what is required to support the
progression of IM in the UK.
Keynote speakers will include:
George Gillespie, Chief Executive Officer, Mira
John Miles, Group Board Director, ARUP
Jason Webb, Head of On-Line Services, Association of Train
Operating Companies
Ian Drummond, Assistant Director, Transportation Leicestershire
County Council
Mark Dumville, Director, Nottingham Scientific Limited
Professor Alan Wells, NEREUS and University of Leicester
This free event has been organised in partnership with Transport
iNet and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
