Leicester's digital media and arts centre Phoenix Square has
joined a nationwide project that transforms spaces for young people
today.
'Somewhere to_'The scheme, run by Livity and Channel 4 and
funded by Legacy Trust UK, utilises spaces - new and old, busy and
derelict - for artistic and cultural activities for young people
aged 16 to 24. The spaces are transformed for activities such
as rehearsals and performances.
More than 25 spaces have already become available in Leicester,
four of which have been contributed by award winning sustainable
investor Blueprint, the specialist regeneration developer
responsible for Phoenix Square.
Blueprint's somewhereto_ sites include a green fingers gardening
space, a street art space and an outdoor space next to Phoenix
Square's urban garden. Blueprint is also donating one of its
business units at Phoenix Square to the cause.
John Coster, editor of Citizenseye and associate partner of the
Phoenix Square venue, speaks highly of the project and the value of
unlocking spaces at dead times. Coster recognises that "there are
young people who want to do things but they struggle to find space
to use. Companies such as Blueprint are essentially "gifting" space
and utilising it for active and positive use in the community."
The project works across the country and aims to improve the
lives of thousands of young people. The regional coordinators for
the East Midlands are looking for new spaces.
