National Tree Week - November 26 to December 4

Newly-launched webshop www.treesandhedging.co.uk is throwing its weight behind a national campaign to encourage individuals, community groups, schools and businesses to make their environment greener.

Treesandhedging.co.uk is helping to fly the flag for National Tree Week - which is masterminded by The Tree Council - by urging more people to realise that it is vital to help replace "green lungs" which may have been lost to tree diseases, the effects of drought or too much rainfall, or removed to make way for new developments.

National Tree Week runs from November 26, 2011 to December 4, 2011 and marks the traditional start of the tree planting season, so now is the ideal time for everyone to think about ways in which they can improve the UK's landscape.

Each year the Council's member organisations, including voluntary bodies, schools and community groups and its 8,000 tree wardens support the initiative by setting up fun events.

The Tree Council also has plenty of tips for groups which want to organise their own event - and they are urged to register these on the Council's website - www.treecouncil.org.uk

Of course you could make it a double celebration - by getting involved in activities during National Tree Week and also choosing to plant trees in honour of the Queen's Royal Jubilee in 2012.

The Woodland Trust is also  running its own campaign to rally people to mark the Jubilee by planting trees.

www.treesandhedging.co.uk director Zoe Henderson said: "Everyone loves a woodland walk, having a picnic under the shade of a giant oak tree or dashing to shelter under a sturdy tree during a shower, but few people realise how many trees are lost each year and how important it is to plant more for the benefit of future generations.

"People who want to plant trees, to create a community area, enhance their garden or mark a special occasion, may have lots of ideas but also be unsure about which species to select for a particular location.  This is where we can help.

"We were determined that www.treesandhedging.co.uk would be user-friendly. With that in mind, we spent a lot of time adding easy-to-use filter tools to our new website, so that even people visiting for the first time would find it really simple to use.

"At the click of their mouse, they are signposted to a wealth of information about the qualities of individual species of trees and their suitability for planting in different soils and locations. It is just as easy for people to place their orders too.

Smaller bare-rooted plants are a cost-effective way of starting a tree-planting project and they can be delivered ready for easy transplanting.  By ordering now people who are eager to get on with their projects can also look forward to an early delivery.

Treesandhedging.co.uk is a sister business to the wholesale company The British Hardwood Tree Nursery, which has a wealth of prestigious agricultural, public and private sector clients.

Fellow director Andrew Henderson said: "We spotted a way of using our 20 years of experience in this field to offer a wider range of people a quick and fuss-free way of choosing and buying trees, plants and related sundries."
