The University of Northampton will be hosting the official
Coca-Cola Olympic Torch Tour on Friday 28 October 2011 at the
Pavilion Building, Park Campus, 12-6pm.
Following a successful bid by our Students' Union we are the
only University in the East Midlands to be hosting the Olympic
Torch on its tour, as part of a nationwide search for inspirational
young people - Future Flames - to carry the Olympic Flame during
the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.
Students, staff and the wider community are all invited to enjoy
and take part in a unique and free sporting spectacular for the
University, town and County. In addition to the Coca-Cola Olympic
Torch Tour bus and being able to have your picture taken with the
Torch, there will the opportunity to participate in and see
demonstrations of a wide range of sports near the Pavilion
Building, at nearby Benham Sports Arena and in Everdon Sports
Hall.
If you want find out more about a new sport or even have a go
this is the ideal occasion! Just come along with trainers and loose
fitting kit. Planned events on the day include Hockey; Climbing;
Football; Cricket; Boxing; Basketball; Martial Arts; Badminton;
Wheelchair Basketball; Table Tennis; Rugby Union; Trampolining;
Boccie; Handball; Nordic Walking; and information on a range of
sports clubs and societies, including the University's new Rowing
Club.
This event includes free car parking and will feature Olympians
past and future, along with official coaches from Northamptonshire
Sport; Northampton Town Football Club players (and Clarence the
Dragon!), and Northampton Saints - all on site to get guests
limbered up, fit and in the mood for London 2012.
The Coca-Cola Olympic Torch Tour DJ will be booming out tunes on
the day, including music from artists backing the campaign - Dizzee
Rascal, The Wanted, Eliza Doolittle, and You Me At Six.
The event is open to all ages and will particularly recognise
the positive contributions made by young people in the region every
day. Coca-Cola, a Presenting Partner of the London 2012 Olympic
Torch Relay, will be calling on everyone in Northampton to nominate
the Future Flames they know: young people who use their passion in
areas like sport and physical activity, music and dance, and
community and the environment; to spread happiness in their local
communities.
