Youngsters don't shy away from day's events

LHA-ASRA proved that housing association work is about more than just bricks and mortar by holding a community event in aid of vulnerable mothers and their children.

The seaside-themed open day brought the fun of a beach holiday to Kirton Lodge, in Leicestershire, to raise cash for the centre and boost awareness of its work supporting vulnerable women.

Terri Chapman, manager at Kirton Lodge, said: "Everyone knows about LHA-ASRA's homes but this is the side of housing associations that many people do not see - the vital support services we offer the most needy in our communities.

"Many of the children who were at Kirton Lodge have never had the chance to go to the 'real' seaside, and they may possibly never go in the future. It was great to be able to give them the next best experience."

Artistic residents and staff at Kirton Lodge decorated the hostel walls with beach and jungle scenes for the 'safety in the sun' open day.

On arrival, clients and visitors received sun cream, sun safety information and a Hawaiian necklace, lovingly made by centre staff.

Representatives from the local Sure Start Centre and nursery held a quiz about the best action to take to protect yourself and children when out in the sun.

To really create the seaside feel, there was a big sand pit, hook the duck stall and coconut shy. And to top it off, candy floss and popcorn stalls with a cone of fish and chips for lunch.

Accommodation at Kirton Lodge is funded through housing benefit, with further support from the Government's Supporting People programme.
