Photography students are focusing on their future with valuable
work experience made possible by leading landlord whg.
Students from Walsall College have been given a fantastic
challenge by the borough's largest provider of affordable and
quality homes. They have been invited to work on a prestigious
project for Wolseley UK's Integrated Supply division, which
provides whg with all the materials needed to carry out repairs and
maintenance to homes.
15 HNC (Higher National Certificate) students will photograph
products for commercial stock brochures to be distributed
nationally and the exciting opportunity may lead to further
projects with the company.
whg, which has a longstanding partnership with Walsall College,
was asked by Wolseley to help involve local photography students in
producing its marketing material.
Jane Preece, Director of Organisational Development at whg and a
Walsall College governor, said: "We saw an opportunity with
excellent benefits for both the students and our contractor.
Nothing brings theory to life more than practical, real-life
experience and that's an essential part of learning.
"whg is a housing provider first and foremost but our role in
the community doesn't end there. We have a responsibility to those
who live, work, study and invest in Walsall to create opportunity
for development and improvement wherever possible."
The students will undertake the paid work, combining creative
and practical experience, over the next few months at Wolseley's
Walsall depot, which exclusively serves whg.
Ian Male, Head of Photography at Walsall College, said: "The
ethos behind this course is to mirror industry to fully prepare
learners for their future in the world of work. Working with
Wolseley gives us a perfect opportunity to explore the reality of
industrial photography.
"What is great about this project is that our learners will be
paid for their work, generating a professional experience for their
CV while achieving a high level qualification. These are exciting
times and such links help ensure a promising future for our
learners."
The bank of images the students build up will be used in
brochures, catalogues and on websites to help Wolseley customers
choose from thousands of different products, from boilers to door
handles.
A few spaces are still available on the HNC in Photography level
four and five courses at Walsall College and there are part-time
and flexible study options. Email imale@walsallcollege.ac.uk for
