Staffordshire based CP Northern have just completed the final
phase of a prestigious contract to install lighting control systems
for the new Handball Arena that has been built for the 2012
Olympics to be held in London.
The 7,500 capacity sports arena situated within the Olympic Park
will stage Handball and Modern Pentathlon Events during the
Olympics and will also be used for Goalball during the subsequent
Paralympics.
CP Northern whose reputation within the construction industry
continues to grow fought off competition by providing a lighting
control solution for the Olympic Handball Arena that covers the
three fields of play, including HDTV Lighting, 18 scene
combinations of 250 high pressure discharge lights and also the
control of 52 Sunpipe aperture motors allowing natural daylight to
supplement required event lighting. The contract was worth
£220,000 and has taken 8 months from design to practical
completion.
"We were of course delighted to secure this prestigious contract
and due to the high specification and diverse control requirements
we were one of the only companies in the UK that had the experience
to deliver such a system catering for the bespoke Olympic
requirements and thereafter when the arena will be adapted as a
multi-use sports venue for community use. It will continue to host
various classes of sports from amateur to international including
Handball, Basketball, Badminton, Volleyball, Netball, Table Tennis
and Wheelchair Rugby as well as incorporating a health and fitness
club and cafe," said James Hart, Project Director, CP Northern.
"Whilst there was a detailed specification for the Olympic
event, which had to incorporate high levels of lighting for the TV
cameras, we had to be ensure the arena would be energy efficient
and fit for purpose post Olympics. Within the design the roof area
has 52 vertical sun pipes with aperture motor control to allow
natural light to enter the building, thus reducing the amount of
artificial light needed, and providing energy efficient savings for
the post Olympic legacy period.
"All of the lighting controls including the sun pipe motors are
remotely controlled and monitored from a head-end PC that provides
live status of system components to ensure everything runs smoothly
at the arena with millions of people watching the Olympics
throughout the world. We have also enabled the system to aid
building maintenance on the Field of Play through the remote
control of luxlifts that lower clusters of lights down from high
level to waist height for ease of lamp changes. All the emergency
luminaires throughout both the Field of Play and back-of house can
be monitored by the system for correct operation and the results
logged on the front end computer database. The 13,700sq m
back-of-house area, includes facilities for catering, security, the
worlds media and the temporary warm-up area of 1400sq m.
"It's a remarkable achievement for the company and we are very
proud to play a part in the legacy of the 2012 Olympics," added
James.
