Covanta Energy
Covanta Energy, the world's leading Energy-from-Waste provider
(EfW), has recently appointed Edward Thomas as Project Director,
Construction.
Edward brings more than 20 years' experience in the construction
and engineering industry. Prior to taking up the role as Project
Director, Construction at Covanta, Edward worked as Project
Director at Shanks/United Utilities where he led the successful
mobilisation and implementation of UU's first waste venture - a
£500 million project.
Edward's expertise will be of significant importance to Covanta
as it continues to expand and advances its EfW projects.
Commenting on his new role, Edward said: "Covanta has taken a
very positive, pro-active approach to delivering Energy-from-Waste
technology in the UK and Ireland. It has built a team of very
capable people as part of that commitment and has strong support
from its parent company in the US."
Earlier in his career Edward held the position of Director of
Design, Engineering and Construction at Veolia ES UK. Here he was
responsible for restructuring the organisation and workings of the
engineering team to create and lead £450 million worth of
projects. This extensive work included innovative research, through
to the construction and commissioning of large EfW projects.
In his role as Managing Director at Veolia ES Southwark, Edward
led the Tower Hamlets, Southwark & London Sorting contracts
where he concluded negotiations on the £850m, 25-year PFI
contract, establishing the delivery company and managing the
transition through to successful operation. Edward also delivered
on time and on budget an £85 million infrastructure programme
for a 35-year, £1.3bn Public Private Partnership while at
Veolia ES (formerly Onyx, Sheffield). This included all planning,
permitting, procurement and delivery of an Energy Recovery
Facility, new Materials Recycling Facility and the refurbishment of
five recycling sites and supporting infrastructure.
Edward holds qualifications which augment his role in
environmental services and engineering. In 1996 he became a
Chartered Engineer and more recently in 2009 he became a Chartered
Environmentalist. He studied Engineering with Management at the
University of Durham, and later completed his Masters Degree in
Business Administration.
"I am looking forward to delivering the first of the new
facilities for Covanta in the UK, building on the huge amount of
work that has already gone into getting this far," said Edward.
Edward's primary duties will be the negotiation of the Ince EPC
Contract and managing the subsequent construction of the Ince
facility. Edward will be reporting to Stuart Sim, Director of
Construction and Operations.
Edward joins Covanta's construction team and will be based at
the company's head office in Halesowen, West Midlands.
