Three Birmingham professionals are aiming to summit 24 peaks in
24 hours in the Lake District to raise £4,000 for the
Alzheimer's Society.
Barry Flint, principal surveyor at GVA Grimley, Adam Rock,
associate at Bruton Knowles, and Robert Sloan, associate at
Greenberg Traurig Maher, aim to ascend the peaks, each one over
2,400 feet, within 24 hours total walking time.
The challenge starts at 6am on 30th September and the route
follows well-defined ridges, but the height climbed and descended
throughout the challenge is significant. The 31-mile hike includes
many of the famous peaks such as Red Pike, Scafell Pike, Helvellyn
and Great Gable, as well as lesser known mounts like Red Screes and
High Stile.
Adam Rock said: "The team has each been affected in one way or
another by dementia whether through dealing with family members
currently suffering from this terrible disease, or through the
experiences of relatives that have recently passed away. We chose
the 30th of September to start our adventure as this was my late
grandfather's birthday. He passed away earlier this year; both my
grandparents suffered from Alzheimer's in the latter stage of their
lives."
All funds raised through the team's endeavour will support the
Alzheimer's Society's 'Dementia Cafes', which offer café
style get-togethers for dementia sufferers and their carers. The 24
peaks in 24 hours challenge is the team's fourth fundraising
adventure for the charity, which works to improve the quality of
life of people affected by dementia in England, Wales and Northern
Ireland.
In '06, the team walked across Hadrian's Wall; in '07, it was a
canoe expedition down the River Wye and, in '08, the team cycled
200 miles coast to coast crossing the Lake District, the Yorkshire
Dales and the North York Moors.
Barry Flint added: "Every penny counts. Alzheimer's is a
debilitating disease, and, as we live longer lives, more and more
of us could be affected by brain disorders, so we ask that you dig
deep."
