Young cancer patients will be able to enjoy autumn sunshine and
fresh air after generous workers donated a garden bench to the
Teenage Cancer Trust's unit at Birmingham's Royal Orthopedic
Hospital.
It is the latest donation to the charity by employees at
Edgbaston-based Pertemps People Development Group (PPDG) who enjoy
an on-going partnership with the charity.
PPDG Northfield-based employment coach Angela Bayley helped
present the bench to the trust's West Midlands regional fund raiser
Craig Burchell, specialist nurse Jayne Forsythe and young patient
xxx from Leeds.
Angela's daughter Dannii, aged 10, is also fund raising for the
charity with the help of PPDG employees and is hoping to raise in
excess of £500.
The specialist young persons unit at the ROH is virtually unique
in that it has its own outside space that can be used by patients
and family.
Angela said: "I'm hoping to get involved in giving the area a
garden make-over in the future but meanwhile I thought a sturdy
bench would be really appreciated. The finance came from our
payroll giving fund and I'm delighted to say this is the second
time that the business has supported my request to help the
ROH."
The £300 bench was supplied by Waterloo Woodwork, a
Solihull-based training organisation which works with people with a
learning or physical disability to produce a range of timber
products.
"The idea of purchasing a bench from one charity in support of
another so that they make a difference to the lives of poorly
youngsters really appealed," said Angela. "It's already become a
popular addition with the patients."
PPDG's total donations to charities and good causes through its
highly successful payroll-giving scheme recently broke the
£150,000 barrier. Around two thirds of staff are involved in
payroll deductions that benefit others less fortunate in the
community.
