A Shropshire insurance broker today issued a security checklist
to help keep local companies safe and secure during the summer
shutdown.
Henshalls, from Newport and Shrewsbury, said businesses which
failed to operate efficient safety and security procedures could
risk making their cover null and void in the event of a
break-in.
Director Martin Pitchford said: "Every business should have
adequate security and safety procedures, particularly if they are
shutting down for a summer break.
"The measures are only useful though if all staff are aware of
them, and procedures can range from the very simple like locking a
delivery door immediately after each delivery, to more complicated
steps which might involve security staff or alarms."
Henshalls urged Shropshire companies to use a summer shutdown
checklist, to help prevent crime. It includes:
• Lock everything away at the end of the day, such as
laptop computers.
• Leave no cash on the premises, and ensure all till
drawers are empty, and open
• Close fire doors, and remove spare door keys from the
premises, or lock them away securely
• Cancel deliveries which may be due during the summer
holiday
• Consider whether someone needs to visit the premises to
remove post
• Ensure there is no rubbish outside the premises which
could be used to start a fire
• Make sure any key holder list, with a security firm or
alarm company, is up to date
Mr Pitchford said: "It's also important to back up all your
computer systems and store a copy of your data off premises.
"And when you return from holiday, ensure your computer virus
software is updated before downloading email or using the
internet."
He added: "Police have issued several useful booklets on how to
keep your business safe. It is worth checking out Your Business -
Keep Crime Out Of It, or the crime reduction website,
www.crimereduction.gov/uk/yourbusiness."
