Challenge.
Pupils at a Stourbridge school got help and advice from
construction experts at Mansell for a special Maths in Construction
Challenge aimed at helping them make their career choices.
Specialists from Mansell's Stourbridge-based Western Region
helped youngsters from Redhill School in Junction Road complete a
range of activities designed to give them an insight into the world
of work and how maths is used in the construction industry.
The students had to role play as construction companies and
worked in groups, devising a company name, and then managing the
construction of a building taking into account environmental
issues, planning, programming, design, quantity surveying and site
management. At the end of the day they were given certificates from
Mansell.
Mansell's regional training manager Jeremy Lydiatt provided help
and advice to the youngsters, along with maths teachers from the
school, as part of the Dudley Education Business Partnership.
Jeremy Lydiatt said, "These youngsters went about their tasks in
a very mature way and came up with some excellent presentations. I
am sure they got a lot out of the exercise which not only gives
them an insight into the construction industry, but gives them an
idea of the problems and challenges they may face in later
life."
Sharon Hinds, maths teacher at Redhill School, said, "The pupils
gained so much from the day, such as teamwork, presentation and
communication skills, as well as the mathematics skills they used.
The team that Mansell send are always so professional and interact
so well with our pupils, and including female surveyors provides a
great career role example for our female pupils."
