A group of 18 young people from Sandwell Deaf Community
Association (SDCA) were treated to a day to remember at the Black
Country Living Museum thanks to a local business.
The young people from SDCA along with staff, volunteers and
costumed guides enjoyed a complete change in routine by going down
the mine, having their own signed Victorian school lesson and
learning about their heritage. Education and fun were definitely
the order of the day as signers interpreted for the children.
The great day out was brought about after staff at the West
Bromwich branch of Pertemps People Development Group adopted SDCA
for a payroll giving donation.
SDCA manager Leanne Hickenbottom-Marriott said the children had
experienced a very different day.
"The employees contribution enabled our deaf children, trustees
and signers who attend our summer activity scheme, the most
wonderful opportunity to enjoy an educational trip out." She
said.
"Not only did they arrange and fund the day but each child
received a museum gift and lots of Cadbury chocolate. We all had
lots of fun coupled with some invaluable history lessons."
Scheme member Lynn Byng joined in the activities to see
first-hand how a donation can make the difference.
"We are extremely proud of our community giving," she commented,
"I was particularly impressed with the children's enthusiasm and
their interaction with all the exhibits, it was a wonderful day out
and delighted we could get involved."
