Coventry University's overall student satisfaction level has
jumped by 6% from 79% in 2010 to 85% in the 2011 National Student
Survey, published on Wednesday 17th August. As a result, Coventry
is now the best modern university in the Midlands - well ahead of
all its major local competitors - and is the second best modern
university in England.
This increase makes Coventry one of the ten most improved
universities in the UK over the last twelve months, with higher
scores across nearly every measure.
Coventry has done particularly well on personal development,
where the university achieved an 86% satisfaction rating (up 7%),
second equal across all UK universities alongside Bath, and beaten
only by Edge Hill, which is a much smaller institution.
Coventry also showed a significant improvement on its ratings
for teaching quality, with 'teaching on my course' up 7% at 87%,
the second biggest improvement of any UK university and on
'assessment and feedback' which is up 7% at 72%, ahead of the
university average of 68%.
Commenting on these results, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor
Madeleine Atkins, said:
"The quality of our teaching and learning is at the heart of
everything we do, so we are particularly pleased to see that
Coventry is one of the best modern universities on these
attributes. For example, we ensure that all student work is
assessed and fed back within three weeks, and our rating has jumped
by 15% in consequence. We run regular module and course surveys and
ensure that we act on the results. We have worked with our Student
Union to double our number of course reps and to ensure that they
input into course development and performance."
Coventry has also improved by 10% to 76% on 'organisation and
management' - with course communications operating particularly
effectively - and on academic support (up 8% at 80%).
Summarising the findings, Professor Atkins concluded:
"Coventry University is delighted with these excellent results,
which show that all the hard work we have been doing to meet our
students' expectations is paying off. And we are successfully
helping our students prepare themselves for future employment
through the way we teach, the opportunities we give them for work
experience and the support we provide in giving them confidence and
improving their skills. The National Student Survey now shows that
we are on course to make our student experience the best in the
country."
