Expert export advice at free seminar to help firms sell to overseas markets

A special event to help companies in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire tap into the lucrative export market will be held next month.

Enterprise agency Erewash Partnership has organised an exhibition and seminar with two expert speakers at Sawley on September 8. The event is being supported by Erewash Borough Council, UK Trade and Investment and sponsored by the University of Derby.

"For many firms, exporting can seem daunting," said Partnership chief executive Ian Viles. "It is seen as too complicated, the domain of big manufacturers and corporate plcs.

"Nothing can be further from the truth. A huge amount of this country's exporting is done by small to medium-sized businesses from a wide range of sectors. There has never been a better time to trade internationally."

To illustrate the point, one of the keynote speakers will be Mick Dunne, a director of Ilkeston-based Upskill, which has successfully launched skills courses in Malaysia and India and won a contract to supply training in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The company maximised opportunities with the help of UK Trade and Investment, finding new outlets when UK markets are tough, and have encouraged other local companies to look abroad.

The other keynote speaker will be Ian Morrison, deputy international trade director of UKTI East Midlands ensuring that regional companies have the opportunity to explore and improve their export potential.

Prior to taking up his current role in 2008 he was UKTI's director of trade in the British High Commission in Singapore and before that he ran the UKTI team in Tel Aviv, Israel. As a diplomat Ian has also worked in Hungary, Pakistan, Spain, Ghana and South Africa.

"People who attend this event will also hear how Erewash Partnership and its members from varied sectors can give real, practical help to firms who are taking advantage of and exploring new overseas markets," said Ian Viles.

The free event will take place at Trent Lock Golf Centre, Lock Lane, starting at 5.30 pm, with a buffet included.

The Partnership is also organising a major autumn networking event at The Novotel, Bostocks Lane, Long Eaton at lunchtime on Tuesday September 27.

Any firm wishing to exhibit or attend the events should contact The Partnership on 0115 944 3944.
