If you always thought you were "to the manor born", then now is
your chance.
An opportunity has come up to acquire the historic title, the
Lordship of Bericote, complete with associated rights and
privileges.
It goes under the hammer in the next Bigwood auction which takes
place at 11.00am on Thursday, July 21 at Aston Villa Football Club
in Birmingham.
The Lordship of Bericote, with a guide price in excess of
£10,000, lies near the village of Ashow next to the
Stoneleigh Estate in Warwickshire.
The manorial title can be traced back at least to the Domesday
Book of 1086. It has passed through the hands of several monarchs
including Henry II, the monks of Stoneleigh Abbey were Lords of the
Manor of Bericote until the Dissolution and subsequently it was
held by the family of former Lord Mayor of London Sir Thomas Leigh
for four centuries.
Sadly, the title does not elevate the owner to a seat in the
House of Lords.
However, it does legally entitle the owner to declare himself
Lord of the Manor with full manorial rights which vary with each
title.
Bigwood director Jonathan Hackett said: "These types of titles
are a variation on a personalised number plate and are proving
increasingly popular.
"Years ago such titles went with ownership of landed estates but
now it normally comprises a bundle of historic documents explaining
what privileges the title afforded - normally peculiar and obscure
rights such as where you can walk and where you can graze your
sheep.
"It is a bit of fun really although I have heard of some people
managing to get themselves upgraded to first class on aeroplanes. I
wouldn't, however, guarantee that…"
Bigwood is merging with Birmingham chartered surveyors Curry
& Partners on September 1 to create CP Bigwood, the largest
independent agency in the Midlands, with more than £2.5
billion of property under management.
