Northampton-based company FG technology, provider of intelligent IT and furniture solutions and part of the Frem Group, has been hailed as the 'One to Watch Company' in the recent Green IT Awards for its simply brilliant innovation that will help people make significant savings and help reduce CO2 emissions. The awards took place to coincide with 'world earth week' last month, to recognise those who have made a significant contribution to improving the IT industry's environmental performance.

FG technology, based in Moulton Park, was presented with its prestigious award by Catalina McGregor, Green IT Liaison Officer at the United Nations, named recently by Computer Weekly as one of the most significant drivers of Green ICT in the western world.

Graeme Horne, managing director at FG technology, commented: "It is such an honour to receive this prestigious award in recognition for our positive commitment to the environment. We pride ourselves on providing pioneering and exciting energy saving solutions for all our clients, helping them to easily reduce power wastage whether it is in offices, schools, hotels or government buildings."

So, how does it work? FG technology's remote control is a slim unit placed in the desk's work surface and duplicates the key controls of the PC. This unique solution means that PCs can be stored away from the user, significantly reducing the heat output in the room. Heat generated by a room full of PCs is considerable, with the average PC giving off 500 watts of heat. With PCs being sited away from the user, and based outside air-conditioned space, substantial reductions can be made in the use and costs of energy-sucking air conditioning devices. This has been proved to save a considerable 1100KW per PC per annum.

The invention also encourages PCs to be turned off over night, simply with the press of an ergonomically placed button. A study by Symantec showed that this could save a further tonne of carbon per two PCs per year.

With recent findings proving that the UK wastes 1.5 billion KWh and £180 million a year in energy from idle computers, FG technology provides a pioneering solution, whilst harmonizing technology with beautifully designed furniture.
