A soon-to-be-launched day nursery is putting its fresh food
where its mouth is, and showing its passion for healthy and
sustainable eating through initiatives that include youngsters
looking after chickens and planting their own fruit and
vegetables.
Located on a farm estate in the peaceful and rural village of
Kinton near Nesscliffe, the nursery with a difference will be
opening its doors on the 5th September to cater for children from
12 weeks to pre-school. Aiming to bring the best of The Good Life,
Little Pixies Nursery will be gently educating youngsters about the
food that they eat, and involving them in the whole process from
choosing which fruit and vegetables to grow, right through to
harvesting and tasting the fresh produce.
And the rest of the food offered to the Little Pixies' children
doesn't escape business partners Debra Lovell and Sarah Felkin's
attention either. Other fruit and vegetables used for mealtimes are
sourced from a local farmer, and concentrate on as much seasonal
produce as possible. "We know the importance of giving children a
well-balanced, natural diet" explained Debra "and as mums ourselves
we've seen first-hand the difference it can make to their
development and wellbeing - which is why we are focusing so much on
getting the children really excited about the food they eat".
"All of our meat is sourced from a great butcher in a nearby
village, and we take pride in knowing exactly where the food we
will feed the children comes from. We also plan to take full
advantage of our idyllic 2,000 acre farm estate location, by
letting them see first-hand how many different crops are sown and
then harvested, all the while encouraging them to get excited about
the different seasons. And they will undoubtedly have great fun
helping to look after our two resident chickens too, as well as
planting, growing and preparing their own fruit and veg" Debra
added.
For youngsters at the nursery all day, Little Pixies aims to
provide a balanced diet that includes four portions of fruit and
vegetables, two portions of protein, and at least two of dairy. The
emphasis on all-round healthy eating will also be extended to home
mealtimes, with a collection of the best-loved recipes being
developed pre-launch. "We know ourselves as mums, that nutritious
meals enjoyed by our kids at nursery can become a firm family
favourite and help involve them in home cooking" added Debra.
Little Pixies Nursery is scheduled to open its doors on
September 5th but has already announced an Open Weekend on August
13th and 14th to give local parents the opportunity to view the
facilities and speak to key members of staff. "Everyone's welcome"
added Debra "and we look forward to seeing lots of new faces at our
open weekend."
