A new £12m development for Teesside University's
Darlington Campus, developed by Nottingham based CPMG Architects,
has just been completed in time for the 2011/12 academic year.
The new five story building is situated on a former brown field
site adjacent to the East Coast Main Line and is set to provide a
unique state-of-the-art postgraduate and undergraduate learning
facility complete with a rooftop terrace, library and double height
café space.
Construction, infrastructure and design business Morgan Sindall
plc managed the 62 week programme of construction works.
Nick Gregory, director of CPMG commented: "Following the success
of the Centuria South Building at the Middlesbrough Campus, it has
been a fantastic opportunity to support Morgan Sindall on another
high quality project for Teesside University. Working with the same
consultants and construction team has been a real bonus -
especially given the logistical and acoustic challenges of
positioning the building next to a railway line."
Professor Graham Henderson, CBE, Vice-Chancellor and Chief
Executive of Teesside University, said: "Our aim is for Darlington
to move towards being recognised as a university town and this new
building sees us take a very important step towards achieving that.
We're delighted with the inspirational work of CPMG and Morgan
Sindall to create a new University facility of which we are
immensely proud."
A blue brick 'spine' runs through the entire length of the
building, sloping both horizontally from one end to the other and
vertically at each end. The building has been constructed using a
steel frame with pre-cast concrete flooring. It features a large
area of curtain walling on the west elevation whilst zinc cladding,
render and Kalwall panels enclose the east façade.
Steve Parks, Morgan Sindall project manager said: "We are
very pleased with the outcome of this building - it's another
example of a project that we've delivered on time and to budget and
reflects our extensive experience in the education sector. The new
building is a wonderful addition to Teesside University's estate
and has transformed Darlington into a true university town."
Work started on site in Spring 2010 and was completed earlier
this month.
