Hunt is on for employees with management potential in the Midlands

Business owners in the Midlands are being asked to identify potential managers and employees with promise to take part in a new project being launched in Leicestershire this month (July). The Rising Stars Management School, which has been set up by training company Reflection Consulting, is seeking out workers with potential to develop their skills in key areas such as performance and relationship management.

"Whilst hard work and commitment within a company can lead to promotion, specific management skills are often expected to just be picked up somewhere along the way," comments teamwork specialist Rosie Garwood, MD of Reflection Consulting.. "Often great employees are promoted into a new management role, but then left to fend for themselves. This programme is about turning people from being a great employee into a great manager."

According to the website www.management-issues.com, over 80% of staff rated their managers poorly because they failed to set goals, use rewards, give feedback or conduct fair appraisals. These are skills that many employees don't need until they enter the company's management system. "The qualities that make somebody a good sales person do not always make them a good sales manager - unless they have the training to make that transition," adds Rosie. "Furthermore, many companies run the risk of losing their most promising employees if they lack opportunities for development."

Business owners and senior managers are being asked to think about which members of staff they feel have who have the potential to be 'rising stars' and to nominate them for the programme. To be considered, staff should have qualities such as enthusiasm, commitment and imagination - and be actively seeking new challenges.

A study by management consultancy Hay Group estimated that poor middle management cost British businesses around £220 billion annually in poor productivity and service. The report also cited poor training and inefficient performance management as key issues. "Very few small companies run their own management training programmes in house, so this is an affordable and highly effective way for those with aptitude to be fast-tracked into achieving their full business potential," Rosie comments.

Full details of how companies can to apply to the programme can be found at www.risingstarsmanagementschool.co.uk or by calling 01509 416936.
