Encouraging children to participate in sport took centre stage
in Birmingham as Moseley and Sparkbrook Rotary Club staged their
annual schools cricket competition.
Pupils from primary schools in the Sparkbrook and Sparkhill
areas took part in the tournament organised by Rotary and sponsored
for the fourth year by employment and training experts Pertemps
People Development Group (PPDG).
Five teams from St John's, Montgomery, Greet, English Martyrs
and Clifton primary schools were joined at Sparkhill Park by an All
Stars team and, in only their second appearance in the quick
cricket tournament, English Martyrs ran out as eventual
victors.
Helping to umpire were staff from Pertemps Coachright who
co-ordinate a range of sports activities in communities across
Birmingham and the wider West Midlands.
Sports coach Roberto Flint said it was great to be involved and
that the children's enthusiasm supported by teachers and parents
provided for a very competitive afternoon. "These events ensure
inclusivity through sport as well as providing an introduction to
the game of cricket itself. Some excellent cricket was played in a
great spirit and thanks must go to Rotary for their organisation,"
he said.
Chairman of Rotary's community service committee Hywel Williams
said: "This year we had over 100 children participating and
everyone received a medal and a certificate with additional small
prizes for the winners. This is about giving our children the
opportunity to play sport, enjoy exercise, and socialise with
pupils from other schools. We are delighted that the weather held
and everyone had an exciting afternoon."
