Staffordshire based lighting specialists CP Northern have come to the aid of a new hospital in Gloucestershire by designing and installing a lighting control system that is hoped will significantly reduce energy costs whilst providing state of the art technology.

The Charlton Lane Hospital in Cheltenham was officially opened in April following a £6.8m revamp and provides day and residential care for the elderly suffering with mental health problems and dementia. The building boasts a modern, specialist assessment and treatment centre for people who need greater help whilst all of the rooms are single occupancy and en-suite.

"There are in excess of fifty bedrooms within the hospital and we have designed and commissioned a lighting control system that operates in conjunction with the nurse call and bed occupancy systems to help both the safety and privacy of patients," said James Hart, Project Director at CP Northern.

"This function is in addition to the control of general communal area lighting and provides "bespoke bedroom and bathroom lighting which is automatically switched on via bed pressure mats interfaced with the system and programmed to operate if a patient gets up or falls out of bed during the night. The nursing staff can also remotely raise and dim the lighting of each bedroom via infrared remote control without entering the bedrooms to check on patient's welfare.

"The hospital benefits from large amounts of natural daylight in the open plan living areas, so to ensure maximum energy savings, the automated lighting control system throughout the building offers full daylight linking which measures the amount of natural light coming into individual areas and reduces the amount of artificial light needed to maintain the desired pre-set programmable lighting levels. An emergency lighting automatic test and monitoring system is also a feature of the system providing massive on-going benefits to the facilities and maintenance management team." added James.

CP Northern supply and commission' intelligent fully addressable automated lighting control systems for private and public sector construction projects throughout the UK and is an approved system partner of CP Electronics, one of the UK's most innovative and respected manufacturers of lighting and heating control products.
