Coventry students with an interest in economics attended a
conference jointly hosted by Coventry University and Barclays PLC
to understand more about the current economic climate and to
experience university life.
The event, which was hosted at the University's William Morris
building, offered prospective degree students the opportunity to
hear from Professor David Bailey and Director, Matthew Burton from
Barclays Capital, the investment arm of Barclays PLC and Dr Paul
Gower formerly from the Financial Services Authority who talked on
a range of financial topics including the Euro economic
situation.
Matthew Burton, who graduated at Coventry University in 2000
with a degree in Finance Economics, discussed with the students the
current economic climate in the UK and Euro zone.
The AS students, who are currently studying A level economics
came from a number of schools across Coventry and Warwickshire
including Cardinal Newman RC School , Myton School and Kenilworth
and Solihull 6th forms.
They also took part in an economics game which is based on
international trade with Barclays Corporate's Relationship
Director, Claire Kenny.
Commenting on the event, Professor David Bailey from Coventry
University said: "The objective of the event was to provide AS
economics students from surrounding schools and colleges, the
opportunity to find out how they can further their studies with a
view to building a career in finance.
"This kind of forum is relaxed, enjoyable and provides students
with the opportunity to talk to people who are already working in
the world of finance and to meet with fellow students.
The University's city centre campus is currently undergoing a
£150 million 10 year re-development and this was an ideal
opportunity for us to promote the facilities to this potential
students."
Claire Kenny, Relationship Director at Barclays Corporate
said:
"We are proud to be working with Coventry University and are
highly committed to supporting their current and future students.
Through sponsoring this event we were able to showcase the success
of a former Coventry University graduate whilst inviting the
students to attend a series of seminars to enhance their knowledge
of the current economic climate."
