employment
Young people in Birmingham seeking help to secure employment can
take advantage of a unique training scheme aimed at bridging the
gap to work.
Taking part in the course could help 200 teenagers secure a job
or an apprenticeship, according to Edgbaston based employment
experts Pertemps People Development Group (PPDG).
The company is working in partnership with Birmingham
Metropolitan College to engage with young people who are not
currently in employment, education or training (NEETS).
Contract manager Jenny Nixon said: "With unemployment currently
running at 7.7% and youth unemployment in particular fast
approaching a million we can definitely help steer people in the
right direction. So our challenge is to engage with 200 16-18 year
olds by the end of July for a 15-week placement where everyone will
have an opportunity to secure five work related qualifications.
"The one size fits all approach through classroom learning
doesn't suit everyone and not everyone achieves through a formal
education. So we're offering a mixture of fun and flexible
activities delivered by our sports arm Coachright with a reputation
for delivering personal development programmes using sport and
music as the vehicle."
Participants can gain the employability skills and
qualifications that employers look for on the course to help them
become better placed to access the workplace or further training.

A team of outreach workers is currently working with a range of
local organisations, including YMCA, St Basil's, West Midlands Fire
Service and Brook Advisory to promote the programme and bring in
additional services that may be of interest or benefit to the young
people. The company will also be offering ethical rewards and
incentives for course participants such as subsidised travel and
food, and mobile phone top-ups as a means of assisting clients.
PPDG recently became a prime deliverer of the Government's Work
Programme in the Birmingham, Solihull & Black Country region
after a national tendering process.
A team of employment experts provides advice on benefits,
confidence building, one-to-one support, CV and interview
preparation as well as finding the right job or training course. In
partnership with DWP, the Ministry of Justice and Jobcentre Plus,
they deliver a diverse range of employment and training initiatives
and many programmes financed by the European Social Fund. In 2011
the organisation was designated the fourth best company to work for
in The Sunday Times Best Companies listing.
