A football crazy Walsall youngster has scored sporting success
thanks to a holiday scheme run by leading housing provider whg.
Budding goalkeeper Callum Jessop was taking part in whg's Soccer
School when he was spotted by Walsall Football Club scouts for
their "Talented and Gifted" scheme.
The 11-year-old, from Blakenall, now receives specialist
coaching each week at the club's base, Banks's Stadium, to nurture
his talent.
Callum said: "I began the Soccer School as a defender and was
asked to go in goal because the original goalkeeper was away for
the day. They spotted me and signed me up - I can't believe I was
chosen."
whg, which sponsors Walsall FC's youth team and Centre of
Excellence, has provided Callum with the football kit and
boots he needs to take part in the programme, as well as a
mentor to ensure he makes the most of his opportunities.
His mentor, Ryan Higgins, also from Blakenall, meets with Callum
each week, making sure he attends his coaching sessions and keeping
him on track with his sport and education.
Ryan is employed as a Community Champion as part of whg's NOW
Programme, which also funds the Soccer School.
NOW Programme Manager Connie Jennings said: "The Walsall FC
scouts were quick to spot Callum's excellent goalkeeping
skills.
"We will be watching his progress with interest as it looks like
we may well have kick-started the career of a first-class goalie.
We are delighted with his success and wish him well for his future
sporting career."
NOW, managed and delivered by whg, helps people to learn new
skills, take part in activities and stay healthy and well. It
receives funding from the Big Lottery and VIEW (Visionary
Investment Enhancing Walsall).
Callum's dad, Graham, said: "Callum is really enjoying his
coaching sessions and learning a lot - his footballing skills are
coming on in leaps and bounds.
"We are very proud of him and we're grateful to whg for all the
support they have given him."
