Shropshire employers must protect younger staff who may be at
risk in the workplace.
Matt Reeves, who leads the health and safety team at Henshalls
Insurance Brokers in Newport and Shrewsbury, said company bosses
must take care over vulnerable employees.
"Traditionally many younger workers lack the skills and
experience to keep themselves safe, so it's down to the employer to
make sure they reduce the risks."
He said workers were generally categorised as "young" if they
were above the school leaving age of 16, but under 18.
"So if you're taking someone in this age bracket, either in a
temporary or permanent position, you need to go the extra mile to
protect their health and safety."
Matt said employers should start as they meant to go on, by
making a full record of the young person including their start
date, job title and their manager's details.
"Ensure they receive a full induction before they begin work,
including emergency procedures and other safety precautions.
"Look at any parts of the job that may have to be restricted
given the employee's age and inexperience, and explore whether the
work needs to be ruled out altogether, or whether it could be
carried out under close supervision.
"You will also need to update your company's risk assessments
given the additional issues the new employee creates, and explain
the correct way to report accidents, as well as telling them how to
access first aid supplies and treatment.
"And if protective equipment is required while the young person
is working, you must stress its importance and ensure they use it
correctly.
"Taking on a younger person gives your new employee a great
opportunity to experience their first steps into the world of work,
but it's the employer's responsibility to ensure they are safe at
all times."
