Pupils from a Nottingham school were given a thrilling glimpse
of how the homes of tomorrow will help to safeguard the future of
the planet.
Alec Hamlin from specialist developer Blueprint told students
from Greenfields Community School: "The homes we live in have a
massive impact on energy security, fuel poverty and climate
change."
Blueprint is behind the nearby Green Street in The Meadows
housing development, a 38-home super-sustainable project, which it
hopes other developers will emulate after its sell-out success.
Alec, a planning and development surveyor, said: "The homes at
Green Street use a fraction of the energy used in a typical house.
This is largely down to the way the houses retain heat in the
winter, resulting in a significantly lower amount of gas usage.
The houses include many of the latest sustainable,
energy-efficient features minimising their impact on the
environment and ensuring their owners enjoy low energy bills. These
include roof-mounted solar panels, very high levels of insulation,
maximum use of natural daylight and efficient water use.
Multi-award winning developer Blueprint, based in Nottingham,
has been responsible for two other major green schemes on
brownfield sites - No.1 Nottingham Science Park, off University
Boulevard, and a new complex in Leicester called Phoenix Square
which comprises homes, office studios, independent arts cinema and
café bar.
